Reclamation Act

Reclamation Act
The Reclamation Act of 1902 (43 U.S.C.A. No. 391 et seq.), authorized the Secretary of the Interior to locate, construct, operate, and maintain works for the storage, diversion, and development of waters for the reclamation of arid and semiarid lands in the Western States. To perform these functions, the Secretary in July 1902 established a Reclamation Service in the Geological Survey.
In March 1907 the Reclamation Service was separated from the Survey, and in June 1923 the name was changed to Bureau of Reclamation. The basic objectives of the Federal Reclamation program, as administered by the Bureau of Reclamation, are to assist the States, local governments, and other Federal agencies to stabilize and stimulate local and regional economies, enhance and protect the environment, and improve the quality of life through development of water and related land resources throughout the 17 contiguous Western States and Hawaii
